Waitrose and John Lewis staff will wear badges saying which languages they speak in bid to make foreign customers feel more welcome

  • Trial scheme will launch at 10 Waitrose branches and seven John Lewis ones
  • Language badges available include Urdu, French, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish
  • Welsh is not included but the relevant badge is already available to Welsh staff  

Waitrose and John Lewis staff are to wear badges stating which languages they speak to help foreign customers feel more welcome.

A trial scheme will begin in ten Waitrose branches and seven John Lewis stores this month, before spreading nationwide.

Katie Papakonstantinou, of John Lewis, said: ‘The UK is made up of a wealth of different languages and cultures and we want to celebrate that diversity by offering an even more tailored level of customer service.’

The 20 languages were selected based on census data, tourism information from Visit Britain and a survey of shops in London.

Badges are available for Urdu, Arabic, French, Mandarin, Spanish, German, Italian, Hindi, Polish, Punjabi, Bengali, Gujarati, Cantonese, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Hebrew, Tamil, Filipino and sign language.

Welsh is not included, but the relevant badge is already available to staff in Wales.
