Beckham Netflix director admits it was ‘unpleasant’ to discuss marriage issues

Victoria Beckham sings karaoke with David on night out

David and Victoria Beckham had no trouble talking about the highs and lows of their two decades of marriage, but the director of their upcoming Netflix documentary found it awakward at times.

Fisher Stevens has admitted it was “unpleasant” to ask David and Victoria about their marriage “difficulties” while filming new four-part series Beckham.

The fashion designer, 49, and the former footballer, 48, first met in 1997 and have been married for 24 years, tying the knot in 1999.

In the new tell-all documentary, the power couple open up about their relationship like never before, including the more difficult parts of their marriage and “rumoured infidelity scandals.”

Asking them the difficult questions “wasn’t pleasant, but we got into it.”

Sevenes told The Sunday Times: “For me, I approached it as, ‘How did your marriage stay together?’ and you’ll see how he responds. I talked with both of them about the difficulties they went through.”

Producer John Battsek added: “They were both signed up to telling us whatever we wanted to know. I’m sure you’ll say, ‘Of course you would say that.’ But they were. There was no, ‘You will not ask that or do that.’

“Fisher and I thought that might be the case, but we were clear from the start that we would only do this if we could go in any direction we wanted. And we did.”

In a teaser for the documentary, the couple discuss their first attractions to one another.

The couple met at a charity football match in 1997, but, apparently, Victoria knew David was the one before even meeting.

She claims to have stalked her future husband before the charity match.

In the teaser, Victoria said: “The fact I went to the games really was to – some might say I stalked him, I would say see him.”

The former singer saw David after a match by the bar in the Manchester United players’ lounge and something he did sealed himself in her eyes.

She admitted that he caught her eye because he was with his parents and was clearly a family man.

The former singer explained: “When I saw him in the footballers’ lounge, all the other footballers were at the bar, and he was standing and talking to his parents, and I’m very close to my family, and I loved that side to him.”

Adding his side of the story, David simply said: “I just fancied her.”

Victoria added: “I just fancied him, it was as simple as that.”

Posh Spice is also set to make a “classy” confession about the early days of her relationship with her husband.

Victoria said: “My manager kept saying, ‘Try and keep it under wraps.’ So we would meet in car parks. And that’s not as seedy as it sounds.”

David pointed out that it was “classy.”

Looking back on the period where their combined star power got a bit overwhelming, Victoria added: “It’s entertaining when the circus comes to town, right? Unless you’re in it.”
