EastEnders’ Natalie Cassidy keeps dad’s ashes on windowsill and chats with him

Natalie Cassidy has admitted to keeping her father’s ashes in a window in her lounge.

The BBC actor, best known for playing Sonia Fowler on EastEnders, recently opened up about the death of her dad, Charles, which took place in 2021.

In an interview with OK!, Natalie, 40, said that the urn currently sits beside a photograph of Charles and her late mum Evelyn on the windowsill of a room she prefers to call the “posh lounge”.

She explained: “I know it might be a bit morbid for some people but he sits on the windowsill and I like to have a chat with him.”

The actor shared that in the final years of her dad’s life, he moved in with her and her fiancé Marc Humphreys.

“My dad was with us because his health started to deteriorate and I didn’t want him to be living on his own any more.

“I decided to bite the bullet and find somewhere with an annexe, so that Dad was still with us, but could also be independent and have his own space,” she said.

After admitting that her father was plagued by a plethora of “medical issues” towards the end of his life, Natalie said that she feels “very fortunate” to have the chance to share her home with him.

The soap star also continued to state that after her dad died, she decided to turn his annexe into a space for her family, including children Eliza, 13, and Joanie, seven.

“I’ve made Dad’s bedroom into a bit of a games room, so there’s a pool table in there and we’ve got lots of cupboards for all the kids’ toys and board games,” she told the publication.

However, she claims the family still call the space ‘Grandad’s’ and that she finds it “weird” with him no longer in the house.

“I miss him terribly,” Natalie added.

Elsewhere in the interview, the Londoner has admitted that she doesn’t want her 13-year-old daughter to necessarily pursue acting

Sonia, who shares Eliza with former partner Adam Cottrell said that: “As a mum, I just want her to do what I didn’t do, and that’s just to get some more stuff under her belt.”

The ex-Strictly Come Dancing contestant also revealed that Eliza is currently signed to an agency, but feels as if her education is “important”.

However, Eliza has already had a taste of TV – having appeared as a contestant on Junior Bake Off 2021.

Natalie decided to keep the news that her daughter was participating in the competition private until she had left the show.

Announcing the news to fans at the time, the mum-of-two said: “This is Eliza. She was 10 and decided to enter for Junior Bake Off.

“I said, ‘oh Eliza, you’ll never get through, thousands apply and I don’t want you to be disappointed’. She got through. And her confidence, determination and maturity has blown me away.”
