Giovanni Pernice’s parents say ‘he was just doing his job’ before Amanda quit

Strictly: Janette reveals Giovanni and Amanda won’t appear on weekend show

Giovanni Pernice’s parents have spoken and insisted that he was “just doing his job” before Amanda Abbington pulled out of Strictly Come Dancing.

The dancer, 33, has been at the centre of rumours of a feud with his celebrity partner Amanda, 51, which they both denied.

His mother Rosalda and father Piero have now spoken out and said they believe the pair could have gone all the way to the finals and won the Glitterball.

Speaking at their family home in Italy on the island of Sicily, Giovanni’s father Piero, 66, told The Sun: “We are surprised by the fact she left the show, because everything was going OK — we thought they could have won.

“It all seemed OK for them before she quit the show. My son is a really nice, polite and respectful boy.

“He always had good results with different partners and he has never had problems with them”.

Rosalda noted that the contestants “have to train tough hours” and Giovanni “was just doing his job”.

Piero, who is a police officer, also claimed that Giovanni thought Amanda would sometimes become “tired” during training.

Actress Amanda quit the show the show last week on medical grounds.

Her exit from the show was confirmed on BBC spin-off show, It Takes Two, on Monday and Amanda later issued a statement on social media.

She said: “It is with deepest regret that I had to leave Strictly. I did not come to this decision easily or lightly but for personal reasons I am unable to continue.

“It was an absolute joy working with my fellow contestants, they are a beautiful, hardworking and talented group of people who I love and who I will miss seeing every Friday and Saturday and competing alongside.

“I want to thank the incredible production team and everyone on Strictly who looked after me and who are so kind and caring. It’s a wonderful bunch of people and I’ll miss all of them.

“I’m so sad that I am unable to go any further. Thank you to everyone who voted and who sent wonderful messages and inspiring support.

While Amanda did not mention Giovanni in her post, the dancer shared his own message on Monday detailing how sad he was about their exit.

He posted a snap of the pair from Movie Week and penned: “Amanda…I am so sad we can’t continue but I am proud of what we achieved and I am sending you so much love.”
