Huge 80s pop singer ‘to star in Sainsbury’s Christmas advert’ this year

Rick Astley will be the face of supermarket chain Sainsbury's Christmas advert this year, according to reports.

The pop star, 57, who rose to fame in the 80s, has allegedly already filmed scenes for the festive TV advert at one of Sainsbury's flagship stores in Bromley, South East London.

A source told The Sun: “It's going to be a battle of the Christmas ad crooners. Rick is a huge name and has a massive fan base. Bosses are chuffed to have booked him.”

No other details about the ad have been revealed, with retailers aiming to keep their Christmas adverts under wraps until the very last minute every year.

OK! has contacted representatives for Rick Astley.

According to The Sun, a Sainsbury's spokeswoman dropped a huge hint that they had indeed signed Rick Astley, when she said: “We’re never gonna give up the secrets of our Christmas ad this early.”

Rick topped the British charts for five consecutive weeks in 1987 with his hit single Never Gonna Give You Up, which has became the song he is best known for.

Last year, Alison Hammond was the star of Sainsbury's Christmas ad. She played a medieval countess who wasn't a fan of Christmas pudding.

The source also told the publication: "It's going to be a battle of the Christmas ad crooners," after reports emerged claiming Michael Buble will star in Asda's Christmas TV ad.

It comes after it was reported that Michael Bublé is set to star in Asda's Christmas campaign this festive season.

According toThe Sun, 48-year-old Michael will appear as a checkout worker in the festive ads and he is also tipped to sing in the campaign, too.

OK! has contacted representatives for Michael Bublé for comment.

“The Christmas telly ad market has ballooned. Everyone wants to have the best in the game,” a source told the publication. “It’s hard to see anyone topping getting Buble singing in an Asda uniform. It’s a brilliant idea.”

With songs from Christmas adverts often going on to dominate the charts, the TV insider added that Michael could have another hit following the campaign.

“Every year his versions of the classics are in the charts, so don’t bet against another hit,” they said.

Retailers aim to begin their Christmas campaigns in early November, with festive TV adverts appearing around the same time. Each year supermarket giants including Sainsbury's, Asda and Tesco go all out with their Christmas ads, as well as retailers such as John Lewis.
