MAFS expert Paul Brunson defends brides and grooms ‘just wanting to get on TV’

MAFS: Jordan and Erica argue

Married At First Sight expert Paul Brunson shut down claims that this year’s brides and grooms are taking part in the Channel 4 show for the wrong reasons.

While the matchmaker, 49, acknowledges that the contestants want “more status”, he insists that their main goal on the show is to find love.

Speaking to Express.co.uk and other press, Paul said: “This is a question that comes up on every show. Right? And I think that what’s very important, if you want to be on television, essentially you want more status. But I always respond and say, well, who doesn’t want more status?

“I think it’s very important for us to understand that they’re no different than any of us. We all want more status. But then the question becomes, well, do they want love? So, let’s put the status part aside. Do they want love? That’s part of what we do in the casting process.

“We are casting right now for the 2024 show, they won’t be married until January so that’s months upon months of vetting to determine whether they actually want love. So, you eventually get a cast that yes, I think they want status, but I also think they want love. And that’s what that vetting process is all about.”

Paul’s co-star Charlene Douglas then chimed in: “And It’s quite a process to put yourself through. I think people have seen in the past episodes in the past few seasons, to know what it’s about now.

“And you know, when you’re in front of Paul, Mel (Schilling) and I, we will challenge you and if you are here for the wrong reasons, that will become apparent. And there has been no evidence from what we’ve seen that anyone has been here other than because they want to find love.”

MAFS concludes tonight with the cast and experts reuniting for the final time to reflect on their time in the experiment.

Wednesday night’s episode stunned fans as several of the stars returned without their spouse.
