Mrs Brown’s Boys branded ‘drivel and totally unfunny’ by viewers as controversial BBC comedy series returns to screens after ten years
TV fans have branded Mrs Brown’s Boys ‘drivel and totally unfunny’ after the controversial BBC comedy series returned to screens on Friday night.
The sitcom, created by Brendan O’Carroll, has been a fixture of the Christmas TV schedules for over a decade with the new series being the first since 2013.
However, the new episode left fans underwhelmed with many questioning why the programme was ‘resuscitated.’
Sharing their thoughts on Twitter, one person wrote: ‘It’s a sad day for the human race today, a new season of Mrs Brown’s Boys starts tonight.’
Another added: ‘The whole nation absolutely does NOT adore Mrs Brown’s Boys. I consider it drivel and totally unfunny.’

Someone else posted: ‘Just going to put it out there, Mrs browns boys is absolute horse dung. I never understood it. It’s the worst thing to come out of Ireland since Jedward.’
‘A cost of living crisis, crumbling schools, uncontrolled illegal migration, an escaped prisoner on the loose, a heatwave, and now a new series of Mrs Brown’s Boys. This country has suffered enough!’ another joked.
While someone else chimed: ‘BBC should offer a helpline for those affected by Mrs Brown’s Boys.’
‘Just a quick reminder that Mrs. Brown’s Boys returns tonight at 9:30 on BBC1; do make sure you’re either out or watching another channel. You’re welcome,’ one social media user quipped.
A few people did seem to be pleased with the news, with one writing: ‘I’m absolutely thrilled that there is going to be a brand new series of Mrs Brown’s Boys.
‘I made sure that I put it into my diary and then made sure that I put it on record so that I could watch it again. I’m so excited, and I can’t wait.’
Another delighted fan shared: ‘Thanks everyone for the new episodes so glad that you’re back. Fighting the temptation to binge them all on iPlayer and I think temptation will win. Thanks again.’
Last month, The BBC confirmed that the series would return for four more episodes on Friday September 8 at 9.30pm.

Earlier this year, show creator Brendan – who also leads the cast as matriarch Agnes Brown – admitted the show has been ‘thwarted twice’ due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as it was originally scheduled to hit screens in 2021.
Speaking of the new series, the 67-year-old comic said: ‘This mini-series was actually planned for 2021.
‘Having been thwarted twice, firstly by Covid-19 and then by a post-Covid shortage of studios, it’s fantastic to, at last, have the chance to make it happen.
‘Fasten your seatbelts and hold on to your hats!’
BBC bosses are delighted to have the show back, with Josh Cole, head of comedy at BBC Studios, and Steven Canny, executive producer, said: ‘There’s no one quite like Mrs Brown.
‘An absolute force of outrageous wit and slapstick that has audiences hooked and belly laughing. It’s great to be back.’
Jon Petrie, director of comedy, added: ‘BBC Comedy are pleased to announce that after a decade since the last full series of Mrs Brown’s Boys, millions of viewers around the UK will be thrilled to hear that Brendan is bringing Agnes and the family back together for a brand-new mini-series of his award-winning show.’
