Mary Earps wins the 70th BBC Sports Personality of the Year
Piers Morgan has questioned Prince William and Kate Middleton after they tweeted a congratulatory message for England goalkeeper Mary Earps after she won BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2023.
The pair put out a tweet from their official X (formerly known as Twitter) account, writing: “Hugely well deserved, Mary. Congratulations! W.” However, Piers, 58, responded to the tweet and asked: “Why was it well-deserved?”
The outspoken star launched an angry rant at Sports Personality of the Year after he clearly disagreed about Mary, 30, taking home the big trophy during last night’s televised show. The England Lionesses goalkeeper has become the second women’s footballer in succession to win the award.
Mary has been in flying form for club and country this year, with her impressive performances seeing her finish fifth in the voting for the Ballon d’Or and being named England Women’s Player of the Year.
Piers took to X to share his opinions with his 8.7 million followers and he sure didn’t mince his words. He wrote: “Trying to get my head around two of England’s women footballers winning BBC SPOTY in successive years… while male sporting superstars with great personalities like Rory McIlroy, Frankie Dettori and Ronnie O’Sullivan have never won it.

“No offence to Ms Earps, but shouldn’t it have been given to someone who actually won something in 2023?”
The television personality’s fans were left divided over his opinion, with some agreeing with him, while others quite clearly didn’t.
One person wrote: “Let it go Piers, would you ask the same question if a male athlete had won it?”
Another said: “Because the amount of young girls now playing and watching football Massive boost to English health fitness and sport. Well done Mary from a father and grandfather.”

A third fan agreed with Piers as he expressed: “I don’t know what’s going on anymore, I find myself agreeing with the comments of @piersmorgan more often than ever.”
While a fourth added: “Totally with you on this @piersmorgan. I don’t want to be rude, but it doesn’t feel like an achievement based on real merit.”
