The late star died in November at the age of 65, with the funeral taking place earlier this month. Friends and family travelled from across the globe to attend the star-studded funeral and included an A-list lineup with stars Johnny Depp, Bob Geldof and Irish president Michael D Higgins also paying tribute to the musician and poet.

He told Belfast Live: “The introduction of all these elements into that funeral mass frankly was a scandal and it shouldn’t have happened. If they wanted to have that sort of event they could have hired a hall somewhere and did all that.”

“He was a good man in his own way and he was entitled to a funeral mass as every baptised Catholic is”.

Father McCafferty claimed: “It showed a completely askew understanding of what we actually are doing when we celebrate a funeral mass.

“The singing of that Fairytale of New York after Holy Communion, totally out of place.

He claimed it was “inappropriate” and called for “something to be done for these so-called celebrity funerals”.

“It was completely inappropriate to say the least, to the point of scandal and something needs to be done about these so-called celebrity funerals in a Catholic Church.”

The three-hour service featured performances and people were seen singing and dancing in the church.

It was not only open to the public but was live-streamed online, celebrating The Pogues frontman’s life and career.
