Verdict: A stop-start universe

You settle into the front seat of your rocket ship. Above you, a universe of infinite stars and possibilities. A course is set, a new planet. The ship starts to thrum with life. 5… 4… 3… 2… 1… and then?

Loading screen. Now you’re in space, but not where you want to be, so you’ve got to click around some maps. Loading screen. 

Now you’re above the new planet, but yet to make groundfall. Menu. Loading screen.

Oh, you get the point. There’s more to Starfield than menu choices and loading screens. A lot more. 

This is one of the most ambitious and, in many respects, impressive games ever made. A game of discovery, adventure, combat, foraging, friendship.

And the further you get into Starfield and the further you stray from its beaten paths, the more its qualities — confidently written quests, extensive personalisation — stand out.

Some of its locations — such as the packed spaceport of Neon — are breathtaking.
