Jess has admitted: ‘Social media is a scary place because nobody’s safe. It feels as though there are a lot of people wanting to see you fall and the minute there’s a little mistake or a little wrong word or wrong picture everything can feel very heavy.’
She has tried to stay out of the public eye for much of the past three years and has not released any music since the tail-end of 2020.
The decision came to deactivate her social media after being relentlessly trolled following her apology for using a transphobic slur.
Jess had allegedly been told to ‘go die’ in vile messages and now feels her online relationship with fans has been ‘ruined,’ after facing backlash for using the slur during an interview on a podcast.

In April this year, she took to social media, telling fans she wants to ‘re-introduce’ herself after a tricky period during which she felt ‘so lost’ and ‘trapped’.
Jess said: ‘It has been a while, a lot of time has passed and a lot has changed. In 2021 I lost a friend in a really tragic way and it has changed the way I see and feel life.
‘I was deeply unhappy and I was so lost in my career and I felt trapped by people who didn’t believe in me during such a sensitive time.
‘I made a decision to walk away from all that negativity and start again because I saw how short life is and how important it is to look after you.
‘This was probably one of the toughest, scariest things I have ever done and at the time I had no idea how it would work out but I had to put my happiness and my mental health first no matter what.’

Although comedian Paddy McGuinness was actually lined up to take over from Sue Barker, people took to social media to express their discontent when they thought Alex was the new host – and according to the presenter, the messages quickly became nasty.
Speaking to The Times, she said the vitriol was so bad she was worried for her own safety, as death threats flooded her inbox.
She said: ‘I was scared to leave my house to even go to the shop. That’s the stage that we’d got to – that, oh my gosh, someone black might be replacing a national treasure could cause such hatred.’

‘It was the first girl I’d ever fallen in love with. It was a relationship that was so new to me. Someone I met working.’
She told the Evening Standard that the trauma of the split had left her in ‘a dark place’ and led to a boozy ‘lost year’ and a spell in therapy.
