In more news emerging from Spain’s San Sebastian Festival, Clara Larraín’s Clara Films has boarded Lucía Lalor’s docu-fiction hybrid “Mam” from Argentina’s Gale Cine.
Described as a “thought-provoking autobiographical hybrid documentary that explores how it is to grow up with a ghost mother,” it follows a millennial in her thirties and her fantasies about her dead mother.
Said Larraín, whose company is taking a minority stake in the project: “Lucía Lalor’s storytelling is both powerful and profound, and we are proud to support her vision of portraying not only her own journey, but the imagery of a generation,” adding: “This partnership underscores our commitment to fostering diversity and originality in cinema.”
“We are honored to collaborate with Clara Films on ‘Mam,’” said Luis Bustamante, CEO at Gale Cine. “Lucia Lalor is a remarkable talent and her project resonates deeply with our mission to bring impactful stories to the forefront of cinema,” he added.
With the film currently in a financing phase, the companies are aiming to start principal photography by the first semester of 2024. More info on casting and release dates are forthcoming.

Among Gale Cine’s most recent productions are short films “Soy tan feliz” and “Presente imperfecto” (both of them selected at Cannes’ short films competition), “Refugiado” (which played at the 46th Cannes Directors’ Fortnight) and “Camila saldrá esta noche,” screen at the 69th San Sebastián International Film Festival.
Clara Films’ credits include: “White is for Virgins,” available on HBO Max, “Atacama” and “HomoNova.” “Aullido de invierno” by Matías Rojas premieres this year.
It’s also behind “What Was Left Unsaid” by Ricardo Valenzuela (FFA Production 2021); “The Ivy” (“La Hiedra”) by Ecuador’s Ana Cristina Barragán (backed by Ikusmira Berriak, Cinemart, Ibermedia); “You Tell Me” by Jacqueline Pepall and “Detrás del mar” by Paula Romaní (FFA Production 2023).
Last June, Clara Films and Barcelona-based VFX studio Unbound Hub forged a strategic development pact for the upcoming dystopian TV series, “Numana,” which participated at Conecta Fiction’s High End Pitch session, held in Toledo, Spain.
