Police on horseback charged the 100,000-strong crowd of demonstrators, including trade unionists, socialists, anarchists, Jews and Irish dockers in what would become known as the Battle of Cable Street.

49 years ago (1974)

Five people died, including four British Army soldiers, when the IRA bombed two pubs in Guildford.

In 1975 four people were found guilty of the attack but in 1989 their convictions were quashed by the Court of Appeal which found them unsafe. The 1993 film In The Name Of The Father was based on these events.

29 years ago (1994)

Some 53 members of a doomsday cult committed suicide or were murdered at two remote villages in western Switzerland.

Members of the Order of the Solar Temple sect were also believed to be involved
in money laundering and arms trafficking.
