Barry Davies: Sir Bobby Charlton was quite simply the best

BARRY DAVIES: Sir Bobby Charlton was a human being of first-class quality that will be sorely missed… quite simply, he was the BEST

  • Sir Bobby Charlton’s death was announced on Saturday and shocked the world
  • A fine player, he turned into a commentator and managed to master his craft
  • Listen to the latest episode of Mail Sport’s podcast ‘It’s All Kicking Off!’

I commentated for a living, but I’m finding it very difficult to locate the words fitting enough to describe the brilliance of Sir Bobby Charlton.

Quite simply, he was the best. He was special. He was a human being of first-class quality.

I watched him as a player for Manchester United and England, including sitting in the ITV commentary box for the 1966 World Cup final.

I was then privileged enough to go on to work with him as a commentator. He wanted to see the best because he was a lover of the game in every sense of the word. He was charming company.

He knew he was not there to interrupt the thoughts of the commentator. He was there to read the game. He would come in at precisely the right moment, make a good point, say what he appreciated, and then retreat for a while.

When he spoke, people made sure to listen, myself included. It is a great compliment to him that I do not know of anybody in the game who would have anything other than good words to say about Sir Bobby.

He never tried to be seen in that way. He was just himself. The last time I saw him was five years ago, in the Royal Box at Wimbledon.

To have been in such a special place with him, and sitting at the same table for the royal lunch is still a nice memory.

Sir Bobby will be missed by everyone who was lucky enough to cross paths with him.
