Cameron Menzies admitted he was desperate to avoid his other half Fallon Sherrock in the draw for the Paddy Power World Darts Championship.

The Queen of the Palace’s partner defeated Rusty-Jake Rodriguez 3-0 in the first round to earn a minimum £15,000 payday. Menzies, who now plays No11 seed Dave Chisnall this afternoon (Saturday), has never been beyond the second round at Ally Pally.

And he is relieved to have missed out on a match-up with his girlfriend, who faces Jermaine Wattimena in her first round tie on Sunday. Menzies revealed the angst in his household when he watched the draw on TV with Sherrock.

The 34-year-old Scot said: “You don't understand how many issues we had. She went down for the draw, I was on the computer going, 'Please, not Fallon, please, not Fallon.

“There's a handful of players you don't want to draw and Fallon is up there. I play Fallon in the house and I beat her eight times out of 10, but she has a moment when she smashes me.

“I know for a fact up there she would batter me. It's her stage, she would batter me. Rusty is a very good player but I would take him over Fallon in a heartbeat.”

The win over Rodriguez could go a long way towards retaining his Tour card, which is under threat after a lean year on the oche. It had been a busy day for plumber Menzies, who just hours earlier had been fitting sinks and fixing water mains.

“I was panicking earlier because I was working today but it kind of chilled me out – it made me realise that darts is a hobby and it's not the be-all and end-all,” he said.

“Today I changed the waste in a basin, I couldn't get the pedestal out because it was concreted in. Then I did an emergency which was a burst water main and I fixed it, then I went to a tenant's house to fix a bath and she wouldn't let me in.

‌“Then I went to another job to fix a kitchen sink, so my job is maintenance. Basically, it is burst pipes and blocked drains – it's not pretty. I would like to be in a situation where I can give up the day job and do this full-time, but I have a long way to go.”
