Manchester United fans observed a minutes applause ahead of their side’s kick-off against Brentford on Saturday in tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson’s late wife Lady Cathy.

Passing away at age 84 earlier this week, the footballing world paid their respect to Cathy Ferguson. 

‘Everyone at Manchester United sends our heartfelt condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family on the passing of Lady Cathy,’ a Man United statement read upon the news breaking.

‘Lady Cathy was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a tower of strength for Sir Alex throughout his career.’ 

And now, Sir Alex’s former side have paid their respect with the minutes applause while the players wore black armbands and the club flew flags at half-mast.

Man United players observed a minutes silence ahead of their kick-off against Brentford

This follows the passing of Sir Alex Ferguson’s wife, Lady Cathy Ferguson, earlier this week

A video posted on social media showed Brentford players, Man United players, staff and fans of both sides observing the minutes applause.

Former players also paid their respect for Sir Alex’s wife, with Eric Cantona taking to Instagram.

‘Rest in peace dear Lady Cathy, he wrote ahead of kick-off on Saturday.

‘My strongest friendship goes to her family’.

On the pitch, Man United were unable to turn around their recent poor run of form as Mathias Jensen opened the scoring.

Things went from bad to worse for Andre Onana, who appeared to be at fault for the Brentford opener.

Pressure remains on Erik ten Hag with his side sitting 13th in the Premier League table with just nine points in eight matches.

The Red Devils are also struggling in other competitions, falling to defeat to Galatasaray in the Champions League in midweek.
