No mistake signing Rasmus not Ferguson

Ex-Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has backed Manchester United recruiting Rasmus Hojlund rather than Brighton's Evan Ferguson up front.

Hojlund is finding his feet after a £72million summer switch from Atalanta whereas 18-year-old Ferguson is on fire for Brighton.

    Credit: Rex

Sagna told Paddy power: “Manchester United didn’t make a mistake going for Højlund over Ferguson because there is a different pressure added when playing for United compared to Brighton.

“If you play for Brighton, you don’t have much pressure, if anything you have positive pressure especially when the team is playing so well and so positively like they are at the moment.

The way Brighton play, they have possession of the ball and Ferguson gets more touches and may have more chances than Højlund at United right now.

“When you come to Manchester United and the team is already under pressure, it’s difficult for one player to change the situation.

It seems like this is what people are asking Højlund to do now because he’s a striker and he has to score. We can’t expect so much from him so quickly.

“We can’t really judge Højlund’s performances so far because it’s early, he’s come to a team in trouble at the moment. Manchester United fans need to be patient with him, it would be great to see him playing when the team is in a positive environment, that is when he will feel ‘himself’.”

Ten Hag 'affected' by takeover saga

Ex-Red Devils striker Dimitar Berbatov fears the ongoing takeover saga has affected Erik ten Hag – but not his United players.

Current club owners the Glazers have still not agreed a sale as they reportedly hold out for £5billion-plus.

Berbatov told Betfair: “I don’t think the takeover will affect the players, but Erik ten Hag and his management staff, as well as those higher up and closer to the owners who run the club will be affected more than others.

“It will affect everybody differently, how you do your job, how you do your directors job, your manager’s job, your scouting job. When there is an excuse for being slack that can impact on the team and the performance on the pitch.”

    ‘Maguire wrong to stay'

Steve Bruce reckons Harry Maguire would have been better off leaving United over the summer.

The ex-Old Trafford stalwart said:“He’s always the subject of frustration from Manchester United supporters whenever he makes a mistake.

“I wonder sometimes whether it is England supporters, but I can’t remember a time when he’s ever let England down – in fact, I think he’s always done particularly well.

“It seems to be that everywhere he’s going – maybe because he is getting stick so much at Old Trafford – that every ground is replicating it. It borders on ridicule, and I don’t like that.

“I nearly rang him in the summer because I know him from my time managing him at Hull City.

“I personally think that I would have moved on because once the manager has showed his cards and made it clear that you won’t be playing then you need to move on.

“He needs to go and find his career again and he needs to feel respected. I thought with David Moyes in charge at West Ham that it would have been a really good fit.”

Coral’s John Hill said: “It has been a tough start for Andre Onana at Manchester United.

“And after another costly error against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, we have slashed the odds on United reacting in January by signing England’s number one goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.”

The Blues reportedly had a £23million deadline-day bid rejected for the two-footed teen.

And the Daily Star suggest the Gunners are “preparing” a £30m offer.

Nusa has notched two goals and two assists in his five Belgian top-flight games for third-placed Brugge this season.

Onana's biggest blunder came 10 years ago

EXCLUSIVE: A massive gaffe spelled the beginning of the end of Andre Onana’s first stint as a senior goalkeeper.

The Manchester United star held his hands up after gifting Bayern Munich their opener as part of a poor display in Wednesday’s 4-3 Champions League defeat.

But ten years ago it was a row with a ref that cost Onana and his team.

Onana, then 17, was on loan from Barcelona at Catalan side UD Vista Alegre in the autumn of 2013 when disaster struck.

Team-mate Alberto Edjogo-Owono said: “He had a big, big mistake in one game where he left his goal to argue about a decision with the referee.

“The other team took the ball quickly and scored an equaliser, very late in the game.

“It became very tough for him. We all knew the situation had to stop.”

  • Bruno insists Red Devils spirit is strong

Skipper Bruno Fernandes has issued a rallying cry to Erik ten Hag’s beleaguered team ahead of Saturday's trip toBurnley

Fernandes said: “We have the players and we have enough experience and enough talent in the team to get through this moment.”

Although the evidence says otherwise after Wednesday's woeful 4-3 defeat at Bayern Munich.

But Fernandes insisted every United player gave their all.

He said: “We controlled really well in the beginning of the game. Obviously they get the 3-1, we still get back, we’re still fighting for the result.

“The positive is that the spirit, the fighting spirit was there. We tried.

“This wasn’t the case that not everyone was good, doing the best for the team or trying to fight for getting the result. Everyone did that.

“It’s just the momentum and against big teams, when you give a lot of chances to them they’re going to hurt you.”

  • Utd stars fuming over De Gea treatment

United stars are still seething at the way dumped keeper David de Gea was treated.

The Spaniard’s replacement Andre Onana was at fault for the Bayern Munich opener in Wednesday’s 4-3 Champions League defeat.

And SunSport can reveal the United squad were left fuming when former No 1 De Gea was shoved out of the side door this summer after 12 years.

De Gea is still searching for a new club after leaving on a free transfer once United failed to take up their option of extending his deal by 12 months.

He was a hugely popular member of the United squad and won the Premier League Golden Glove award last season for the highest number of clean sheets.

Meanwhile, Onana, a £43.8million signing from Inter Milan, is under the spotlight after some unconvincing performances, notably in Munich as United slumped to their third straight defeat on their Champions League return.

They have had their worst start to a Premier League season with three defeats from five games.

  • One careless Ona

Keeper Andre Onana dropped another clanger on his return from Munich yesterday — spilling his cards as he got into his car at Manchester Airport.

At least his latest fumble didn’t cost United anything on the pitch after his Champions League nightmare.

The Cameroon goalkeeper, 27, had a night to forget on Wednesday in his side's 4-3 defeat at Bayern Munich.

With the score goalless, the £47.2million summer signing from Inter Milan produced a howler to gift Bayern the lead.

With 28 minutes on the clock, Leroy Sane cut in from the right and played a one-two with Harry Kane and then unleashed a first-time shot from 20 yards that was low and central.

But instead of producing an easy save, United goalie Onana somehow managed to let the ball through his grasp and into the net – and it does not look like things are getting any better after his mishap at the airport.

However, Onana took full responsibility for the loss afterwards. And fans praised him for demanding to face the media following his error.

The keeper, who has conceded ten goals in five Premier League games so far for United, said: “It's difficult to lose this way because, in the beginning, we started very good.

“After my mistake, we lost control of the game."

    Four United stars in bust-up

Four Manchester United stars were involved in a furious dressing-room bust-up after Saturday’s Premier League home defeat to Brighton, writes SunSport’s Neil Custis and Richard Moriarty.

SunSport can reveal Bruno Fernandes confronted Scott McTominay after United’s third defeat in four games.

While centre-back pairing Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof also lost it with each other following a calamitous defensive display against the Seagulls.

United manager Erik ten Hag tried to restore order as the post-mortem began on a shocking 3-1 defeat that sparked boos from disgruntled fans.

    Dim view of takeover saga

Ex-Red Devils striker Dimitar Berbatov fears the ongoing takeover saga has affected Erik ten Hag – but not his United players.

Current club owners the Glazers have still not agreed a sale as they reportedly hold out for £5billion-plus.

Berbatov told Betfair: "I don’t think the takeover will affect the players, but Erik ten Hag and his management staff, as well as those higher up and closer to the owners who run the club will be affected more than others.

'Maguire abuse at levels never seen before'

United legend Steve Bruce is considering giving Harry Maguire a friendly ring after claiming abuse received by a defender has reached levels never seen before.

Maguire, 30, finds himself an outcast at United after snubbing an exit over the summer.

He endured a torrid previous campaign under Erik ten Hag, making just 16 league appearances. The centre-back was then stripped of the United captaincy over the summer.

And earlier this month, Gareth Southgate launched a passionate defence of Maguire after the defender was taunted by fans during England’s 3-1 win over Scotland.

Bruce told Up Front with Simon Jordan: “I think the abuse of Harry Maguire has gotten to a level that I don’t think any of us have ever seen before."

Huge rise in live TV games

Up to 270 Prem games will be screened live from 2025-26 with clubs on the verge of agreeing the new TV packages.

Today's meeting of the 20 top flight chief executives saw League bosses outline the proposed new schedule to clubs.

The new deal – expected to be confirmed next week – will see between 260 and 270 games per season broadcast live, a significant increase on the 200 matches shown in the current TV contracts with Sky, TNT Sport and Amazon.

It is understood that the reduction to five “packages” from the seven in place now will see an increase in Saturday evening matches at 7.45, although Prem bosses insist the idea of Sunday evening matches has been dismissed.

All four “midweek” fixture lists will be screened in full and club and League chiefs are united in their hope that offering more games will see the value of the domestic deal increase when the packages go out to “tender” over the coming weeks.

Confidence in that happening will increase if the Government gives permission for the League to offer four-year contracts to broadcasters as opposed to the three season deals which have previously been on the table.

It comes with the overseas deals for the 2025-28 cycle already higher than for the current three-year deal, which saw TV rights from abroad overtake domestic deals for the first time.

French broadcaster Canal + agreed a new deal for French-speaking Europe and the Czech Republic which is 10 per cent up on the current package, taking the overall value of overseas deals above the existing  £5.5bn tally.

Cole reckons Toney would improve United

Andy Cole reckonsBrentford striker Ivan Toney would make his old club United “a little bit better”.

    Toney's suspension ends in January.

And ex-England hitman Cole told Betfred: "He’s been a key player for Brentford and he’s scored plenty of goals for them in the Premier League and if the opportunity came up, then why shouldn’t United consider signing him?

"It all depends on what Manchester United see themselves doing going forward.

"He could even help Rasmus Hojlund come through. If they are interested in signing him, then I believe Ivan could be a good addition to this Manchester United team.

"Could Ivan make the step up to a team like Manchester United? We could argue about whether Hojlund can make the step up at Old Trafford.

"Nobody knows what can happen because any player that comes into Manchester United, that we don’t know much about, is going to be considered a gamble."

Red Devils urged to copy Brighton formula

Rio Ferdinand believes old club United should try to emulate Brighton's team-building policies.

Roberto De Zerbi's Seagulls are fifth in the Prem after last Saturday's 3-1 win at Old Trafford with a £16MILLION starting line-up left the Red Devils 13th.

Ex-United defender Ferdinand told TNT Sports: "When you look at Brighton, they are a team over the last three or four years that have been building in terms of a structure and foundation at a football club.

"You can see the way it’s playing out with their recruitment, and even their manager.

"We talk about rotation and changing of players. I think they changed five or six players against them, the player that scored a hat-trick the week before (Evan Ferguson) was on the bench.

"So, they are getting the best out of every single player in their squad, whereas at Manchester United, that’s not happening."

Scholes reckons Utd 'no better' after £180m spree

United legend Paul Scholes has criticised Erik ten Hag's transfer business.

The Red Devils are struggling despite the Dutchman spending more than £180million this summer.

Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir and Jonny Evans all signed permanent deals, while Sergio Reguilon and Sofyan Amrabat joined on loan.

However, Ferdinand and Scholes are not convinced that United's seven new additions have made the squad better.

Speaking on TNT Sports ahead of yesterday's 4-3 loss at Bayern, Scholes said: "I think they are on a very similar path to last season. They had a really bad start (last term) and a poor start this season.

"I thought after last year they were going in a different direction and were starting to take this club somewhere.

"He (Ten Hag) sorted the discipline and then I thought in the summer, he was going to spend £200million to take this club to the next level.

"I don’t think the signings have done that. I think he has made his squad stronger, but I don’t think he has made it better.

"I don’t think he has made a team that can challenge for the Premier League title or for the competition they are in tonight."

    United legend hails Rice

Old Trafford legend Rio Ferdinand and ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy are raving about Arsenal newcomer Declan Rice.

Declan Rice was again outstanding on his Champions League debutCredit: Rex

"For me, as a West Ham fan, for him to have gone and us to start the season in the way we’ve started, it’s been fantastic.

“And I’m buzzing for him. Listen, forget that he played for the club that I support, I love him as a person, as a player. And I want him to do well.”

Murphy was even more enthusiastic about England anchorman Rice.

He told Ferdy's channel: “He’s a joke, isn’t he. He’s so good, he’s so good."

    Onana's 'nightmare scenario'

United legend Rio Ferdinand has described Andre Onana's Bayern Munich blunder as a "nightmare scenario".

The Red Devils suffered a 4-3 defeat to the Bundesliga giants in their Champions League opener on Wednesday.

Bayern broke the deadlock in the 28th minute when Leroy Sane's shot slipped through the hands of Onana and into the net.

United found themselves two goals down just a few minutes later when Serge Gnabry fired his shot into the bottom-right corner following an excellent run from Jamal Musiala.

With the score 2-0 to Thomas Tuchel's side at half time, ex-United defender Ferdinand branded Onana's error as a "nightmare".

He told TNT Sports: "This is a nightmare scenario for Onana. "He is as confident as you like with his feet but as a goalkeeper you are expected to come in and makes saves.

"It is a great bit of skill from Sane to set it up well but he doesn’t hit it with any real purpose. It is not wide of him, it is not in the corners.

"He should save this, he should be picking this up and looking for his next pass. It is a very, very bad mistake and one he needs to recover from."
