Peter Wright's run at the World Grand Prix with Michael van Gerwen’s arrows came to a dramatic end as he missed three match darts.

The sport’s ultimate tinkerman, Wright changes his equipment as much as he changes his socks and this week he has taken the eye-catching decision to use a set identical to the darts used and marketed by Van Gerwen, who was knocked out in the second round by Chris Dobey. Snakebite was pressed about his choice of arrows after beating Ryan Searle in the second round on Thursday.

Asked if there had been any banter between himself and MVG, Wright did an impression of the Dutchman, saying: “You still using my darts?”

Wright continued: “Yeah, I told him he needed his darts sales up. I like the balance of them and I’ll use them until [darts manufacturer] Red Dragon sort me out something similar.”

Wright returned to the oche at Leicester’s Morningside Arena on Friday night for a quarter-final showdown against Luke Humphries. And it looked as if Wright and his MVG darts were heading for the semi-finals as he took a 2-0 lead in the first-to-three-sets affair.

Humphries pulled a set back to make it 2-1, but Wright had to chance to win the match, only to miss three match darts in a single visit. Cool Hand took advantage to close out the set and then take the decider to remain on course for his first TV title.

“I showed a lot of grit and determination out there,” said Humphries. “I am so proud of myself. That could be one of the greatest wins of my career. I didn't throw in the towel.”

Earlier in the night, Gerwyn Price world champion Michael Smith and cruised to straight-set victories over Martin Schindler and Andrew Gilding respectively.
