Sheffield United next manager odds: Neil Warnock in the frame for Blades job if Paul Heckingbottom is sacked | The Sun

CHRIS WILDER is favourite to replace Paul Heckingbottom as Sheffield United manager.

That's according to bookmakers Coral, who've priced up potential replacements for Heckingbottom after a disastrous start to the Premier League season.

The Blades suffered an embarrassing 8-0 annihilation against Newcastle at Bramall Lane on Sunday.

It was the heaviest defeat in the club's history, and leaves them rock bottom of the division with just one point from their first six games back in the Premier League.

Furthermore, Heckingbottom's record in the top division makes for grim reading having won just three of his 16 games as a Premier League manager, winning just three.

Sky Sports claim the Sheffield United hierarchy have no immediate plans to sack their boss, who earned them promotion from the Championship under difficult circumstances.

Asked whether he will be the manager for the next game, Heckingbottom said: "Yes, 100 per cent.

"This might be a theme now by the looks of it. I can't answer any of that, the game, the players, my department, yeah no problem, but things like that you are asking the wrong man."

Results will need to improve but that looks a difficult task with West Ham, Fulham, Manchester United and Arsenal coming up over the next four fixtures.

If there is a change Chris Wilder is the 7/4 leading contender to return to Bramall Lane, according to bookmakers Coral.

Wilder left Sheffield United by mutual honest in March 2021 after almost five years at the club.

The 56-year-old, who's since struggled at Middlesbrough and Watford, took the club from League One to the Premier League – achieving a ninth-placed finish in their first season back.

Slaven Bilic is next at 4/1.

The Croatian, 55, is currently managing in Saudi Arabia with Al-Fateh but does have exactly 100 Premier League games under his belt – winning 31, drawing 30 and losing 39 with West Ham and West Brom.

Neil Warnock is in the frame at 7/1 following his departure from Huddersfield Town, a few months after guiding the club to an unlikely survival in the Championship.

Frank Lampard, Neil Lennon and Nathan Jones are all locked together at 8/1, followed by Notts County manager Danny Crowley at 14/1.

Coral's John Hill said: "Chris Wilder had an excellent five-year spell with Sheffield United between 2016 and 2021, and should the Blades opt to dismiss Paul Heckingbottom, their former manager is the favourite to return to his boyhood club.

"Neil Warnock has only just left Huddersfield but he is also prominent in the betting for what would be his second spell with the Yorkshire club, 16-years after his first."
