  • The coach has been found guilty of misconduct

A youth footy coach has been banned for the remainder of the season after he forced his under-14s girls team off the ground amid a gender row.

The AFLNT tribunal has found Southern Districts coach Mark Breed guilty of misconduct after he questioned the gender of two opposing players during a game between his side and Nightcliff last Friday.

It is understood that Breed shouted out that two of the Nightcliff players were boys before telling his team to walk off the pitch during the first quarter.

Breed faced the Tribunal on Wednesday night where he was found guilty and suspended for the rest of the season.

Responding to the verdict, Southern Districts released a statement on Facebook admitting that it had been ‘an emotional week’ for everybody involved at the club.

Nightcliff president Mark Dodge said the club was disappointed in the episode after Breed accused the club of fielding boys in a girls’ side

‘These are difficult times as we navigate through new inclusive and gender equity education and increase our awareness,’ the post read.

‘The Crocs are always mindful to develop the knowledge and skills to foster a safe and respectful environment for all our members and football community.

‘Our club will continue to maintain a happy and healthy, family environment for our members, supporters and sponsors, at home and away games.

‘As always, we encourage our members to support our games when our teams kick off on Friday night, whilst our senior teams have the bye round.’

Nightcliff were awarded a 60-0 victory as a result of the Southern Districts’ forfeit and now sit second in the under-14s ladder.

Nightcliff president Mark Dodge said the club was disappointed in the episode.

‘Both those players are girls, and irrespective of who they are this is under-14s and this sort of alleged behaviour is not acceptable at a junior level.’
