Van Gerwen celebrates nine-darter like Drogba before Humphries wins latest title

Luke Humphries fought back to beat Michael van Gerwen in the Players Championship final – even after the Dutchman had pulled off a nine-dart finish in Minehead.

Superstar Van Gerwen looked in a commanding position when he began celebrating just like Chelsea legend Didier Drogba used to do at Stamford Bridge, pumping his arms out with the score at 3-2.

But despite trailing for much of the final, British talent Humphries never gave up and just had the edge in a nail-biting finish that saw Van Gerwen blow eight chances to that the match to sudden death.

Humphries, 28, was the victor 11-9 – claiming his third major darts trophy just 50 days after his first with the 2023 World Grand Prix. The second came only last week with the Grand Slam of Darts, where he defeated Rob Cross in the final.

It's a massive achievement for the in-form Brit, especially ahead of the World Championship at Alexandra Palace next month. The draw takes place for the tournament on Monday (November 27) afternoon.
