Blue Therapy’s Michael: “Going on Blue Therapy was a last resort – I struggle with confrontation”

In the new Channel 4 show In Love and Toxic: Blue Therapy, five couples explore their relationship problems with two professionals Denise and Jo, and try to come up with solutions.

It remains to be seen if the participants manage to get their romances back on track but viewers will find out the outcome at the end of the series.

One of the couples on the show are Michael and Lauren, who appeared on the series because Michael felt like Lauren wasn't prioritising him and their date nights as her music career grew.

In an exclusive interview with OK! Michael tells us why he decided the show was the best route to try and solve their issues.

“Going on Blue Therapy was a last resort to save our relationship. I struggle with confrontation when it's just me and another person so I found it quite helpful to have another person in the room who could listen to both sides and understand both sides.

"I don't think Lauren really knew what problems I was having in our relationship until we were sat with the coach but I think she knew in the bottom of her heart that there were issues."

Michael admits that he's been left feeling torn because of Lauren's growing music career as he wants to support her but it's not always easy.

“The more I support her and the further her career grows, the further apart we’ve drifted- it is a double edged sword for me. I want to be supportive but the more supportive I am the further away she gets from me.”

Lauren didn't know Michael had decided they needed to go on the show so she was surprised when she found out.

But she tells us: “I was shocked when I found out because Michael’s lowkey but I thought if he really wanted to work on this, why not? I appreciated that he wanted to work on our relationship."

Throughout the series, Michael and Lauren are encouraged to have open conversations about issues they are facing.

Some of the topics discussed in the show are things that neither were aware of as they'd not told each other before.

While it was a challenging process at times, Michael told us that therapy was useful for them: "It was nice to get everything out in the open because we had issues I didn’t know about or Lauren didn’t know about.”
