BRENDA Blethyn has spilled the beans on the Vera Christmas special, revealing that the beloved detective isn't afraid to take risks and put 'herself in danger.'

The ITV drama returns with a thrilling feature-length episode titled The Rising Tide, which will air on ITV1 this festive season.


In this chilling episode, DCI Vera Stanhope is drawn to the enchanting tidal island of Lindisfarne, leading her on a captivating investigation.

A joyous tradition takes a sad turn when one of the friends is found dead.

As Vera investigates, she uncovers that the victim was recently fired due to misconduct allegations.

Determined to uncover the truth, Vera delves into their past, questioning the events of their first reunion on Holy Island.

Vera Christmas special rocked by major death as beloved character replaced

When asked about the potential danger her character might face, Brenda confidently shared: "In The Rising Tide, Vera does find herself at risk, but…isn’t afraid to put herself in danger."

The actress added: "She gets afraid for herself. But she knows the value of the fear and how far to go in terms of the risk to her."

Brenda revealed that when Vera confronts someone on her own, they're more likely to slip up and say something they shouldn't, leading to an unexpected confession.

She concluded: "Vera also knows that if she confronts someone on her own they are more likely to say something they shouldn’t. So she is more likely to get a confession.”

The synopsis of the Christmas special reads: "As the tide rises, long-concealed secrets begin to surface, threatening to engulf everyone involved. Vera, aided by her trusted and resourceful team, including Detective Sergeant Aiden Healy (Kenny Doughty), navigates treacherous waters, facing danger and deception at every turn. Together, they must unravel the twisted web of lies before another tragedy unfolds."

Viewers can expect an intense and gripping story that dives deep into the complications of friendship, loyalty, and the lasting effects of our past actions.

Joining Brenda and Kenny are an incredible ensemble cast including Jon Morrison as DC Kenny Lockhart, Riley Jones as DC Mark Edwards, Ibinabo Jack as DC Jac Williams, and Sarah Kameela Impey as Pathologist Dr. Paula Bennett.

Fans will watch as Kenny Doughty bows out of the role before being promptly replaced on screen by David Leon.

Filming on Vera's Christmas special and new series wrapped in September.

No official release date has been announced yet, but the Vera festive special is expected to premiere during Christmas, leading up to series 13 in the new year.
