Coronation Street boss teases ‘exciting few months’ after Stephen’s downfall

Coronation Street: The Barlow's interrogate Peter

Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod has opened up on what is set to come for the residents of Weatherfield as Stephen Reid’s (played by Todd Boyce) crimes continue to have catastrophic repercussions.

This week, Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) was arrested for the murder of Stephen after he ran him down with his car, worried for the life of Jenny Connor (Sally-Ann Matthews).

Sarah Platt and the rest of her family are still coming to terms with the fact their son, brother and uncle was a serial killer and managed to fool them all for over a year.

Sarah also had the tough job of firing Michael Bailey (Ryan Russell) from his job at Underworld after he was questioned by the police for conspiring to help Stephen.

During his desperate attempt to flee Weatherfield, Stephen fooled Michael into giving him his pin number to access the Underworld bank account and stole £250,000.

The rest of the residents at Underworld are left wondering whether their jobs are safe, as Carla Connor (Alison King) desperately headed off to Spain to try and secure a new deal to save the factory she worked so hard to build up.

Speaking about what is to come for everyone who lives in Coronation Street, Iain MacLeod told Express.co.uk and other press: “People need obstacles to their happiness.

“If you don’t have them in your show you struggle to find them moments of high drama. I am confident that we have nailed this.

“The consequences and crimes of this scale are going to be huge [and] it is going to be an exciting few months of Coronation Street.”

Peter actor Chris Gascoyne opened up about his exit recently and told Digital Spy: “Without giving too much away, this will affect his future.

“Peter has been arrested on suspicion of murder and he is struggling with his demons. He has always had lots of enemies, but at the end of the day he is his own worst enemy.

“He is the one that has suffered at his own hands the most emotionally and we can see this starting to happen again.

“He is facing prison, the drink is on his mind again, Audrey wants him to pay for what he has done. It is a turbulent time ahead.”

“Peter] has just killed someone so there are so many storylines that can come out of that and so many reasons that he might not be around any more.

“All I will say is I am delighted with my exit storyline. The scripts are superb and I can’t wait to see the reaction to how Peter leaves the street.”

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
