EastEnders boss teases ‘high drama’ on history-making Christmas Day episode

EastEnders: The Six – Revealed teased in BBC trailer

EastEnders boss Chris Clenshaw has teased fans can expect an episode packed with “high drama” for this year’s Christmas special. Viewers have been itching for details ever since the BBC soap aired a first-of-its-kind flash-forward way back in February.

The scene depicted a group of Walford’s women, who are now known as “The Six,” standing beside an unrevealed dead body on the floor of The Vic. The only information fans were given was that the victim was male.

Now that the countdown to the big day is on, the desperate wait from fans is almost over.

Speaking to Express.co.uk and other media, show boss Chris Clenshaw teased: “We can expect high drama and I think it’s something to watch live on Christmas Day…

“I think everyone will be kind of guessing right up until the very end.”

Talking about the iconic flash forward, Chris explained how it marked a huge moment in the soap’s history, stating : “I think other soaps have done it but it’s the first time EastEnders has.”

He continued: “I think the best bit is it’s created a big game for them [fans] to join in and it’s created a kind of community amongst the fans.

“To see them kind of engaged in it as much as we’d hoped for – we couldn’t ask for more, we’re really overwhelmed by it.”

He went on to detail how far in advance the planning for Christmas 2023 was.

“I think it all started 18 months plus ago… We shot the flash-forward the first week back after Christmas in January but obviously the planning of that was months in advance,” he recalled.

“So [it’s been] a hell of a long time and it was weird having meetings before last Christmas about this Christmas!

“And making decisions you would never have to make until a lot further down the line.”

The intrigue of the storyline has naturally led to a lot of speculation and fan theories about what might be coming up on Christmas Day.

“The viewers and fans have really invested in this storyline in particular, it’s had them kind of coming up with theories all the way through the year.”

He went on to add some theories were “sophisticated” and well thought out, while others were less so.

EastEnders continues on Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One. The Christmas Special will air on BBC One on December 25 at 9.45pm.
