GMB: Sarah Ockwell-Smith on child discipline debate
Good Morning Britain fans slammed the show’s child discipline debate as hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard spoke to two guests about the topic.
Bringing on Clare Muldoon and Sarah Ockwell-Smith to the panel, the two women had differing opinions when it came to addressing your children’s behaviour.
Sarah expressed she believed in working collaboratively with them, leaving Clare stumped.
She said: “I think we’ve got very muddled about discipline in our society, a lot of people think discipline is the same as punishment.
“So, the only way to make a child behave better is to punish them, coerce them, shame them, control them and so forth.”

Sarah highlighted she isn’t against disciplining a child, although she strongly advocates for discipline that works with children and helps them to solve problems.
She continued: “Of course, we say no, of course, we take things away from them and stop them from doing things. Of course, there are consequences.
“But, it’s about working collaboratively with the children.”
As Ben addressed their other guest on the panel to see whether or not she agreed with collaborative discipline, it was clear she didn’t.

Clare said: “By the time you have taken to remove these toddlers, remove these children and then try and reason with them, really Sarah?
“Come on, we’ve got things to do in our lives.”
It wasn’t long before viewers watching the show took to social media to share their strong views with many disagreeing with Sarah.
@KasiaGazda commented: “Discipline is always a key to life! Children don’t know until we guide them and set up boundaries. Otherwise, they will never know what is good or bad!”
@susikaam fumed: “Childism? I’ve heard it all now. We need to teach children discipline and about boundaries because that’s how society works. Actions have consequences, and the naughty step (personally I prefer to call It time out) can work if it’s used properly, and the child understands why.”
@BelG_P added: “Children need discipline. Children who are not disciplined just walk all over their parents.”
@Emmaelf tweeted: “What a load of nonsense, that so-called parenting expert is the reason there are so many issues with kids nowadays. Well said to Clare she made more sense.”
