Kate Garraway reflects on massive day as she shares Derek health update

Peter Mandelson on Derek attending his wedding

Kate Garraway gave Good Morning Britain viewers an update on her husband Derek Draper as she talked about “a massive day” the pair had shared.

As she interviewed Lord Peter Mandelson on Tuesday’s show, she acknowledged the fact that he had just recently married his partner of 27 years.

After talking about how pleased he was to finally tie the knot, he added: “And we were very pleased, Kate if you don’t mind me saying so – that Derek came.”

“No, it was wonderful,” Kate stated before the Labour politician explained his history with Derek.

“Derek worked for me as my parliamentary aid, I was first elected in 1992,” he recalled.

“There we go, you were very kind because it’s a massive day for you and it took a lot of organisation to get him there,” Kate remarked.

“And it meant the world to him, so on a personal note, thank you.”

Peter responded: “Well, Reinaldo was insistent we had him there, and it was great to have him there, both at the ceremony and our little party later.”

Derek suffered one of the longest and most serious battles with Covid-19 throughout the pandemic.

The 56-year-old almost lost his life in a lengthy battle with the illness, which left him unable to walk and in need of round-the-clock care.

Earlier this month, Kate explained her husband was still struggling with his health as she admitted he “isn’t doing great.”

Talking at the Pride of Britain Awards, the 56-year-old told Metro: “He’s not doing great, to be honest, but the battle goes on.”

Since returning home from hospital after coming out of a medically-induced coma after months, Derek has been in and out of hospital with kidney and liver damage, sepsis, and even brain inflammation.

Meanwhile, she shared her fear that Derek could die at any time in an interview with Good Housekeeping.

“I’d love to be able to tell you that, since Derek has been home, everything has been easy, that the miracle of him being at home has turned the day-to-day challenges into a breeze,” she confessed.

“But because we keep having emergency setbacks and he’s had to be rushed back into hospital so many times, the fear of him dying has never left us.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
