Neighbours Hendrix star issues huge career update after emotional soap exit

Former Neighbours acting star Ben Turland has landed a new role after leaving Ramsay Street over a year ago.

Playing the role of cheeky chap Hendrix on the soap that aired on Channel 5, Turland left the show in tragic scenes as his character succumbed to pulmonary fibrosis – a condition he developed after being trapped in a school fire. Producers decided to kill him off before cancelling the show, making Hendrix the last on-screen death before the programme ended.

Speaking at the time, Turland admitted he was shocked to learn his character would die on the soap. However, he believed the character's arc had come full circle, after being able to reconcile with his family and find love with Mackenzie Hargreaves, played by transgender actress Georgie Stone.

Since leaving the show, Ben has kept his head down and not appeared in any new programmes. This is now set to change, however, as the 25-year-old teased a new role in the upcoming drama Riptide.

Playing the role of "troubled" Ethan Weston, Ben is set to join the show that tackles the stigma of young men's mental health. He described his character as craving validation and love from his biological parent.

The premise of the show follows single mother Alison who gets hitched to Ethan's rich dad Sean and the family's relocation to the ocean. One morning Ethan's dad Sean mysteriously goes missing whilst surfing at a cove – but as officers investigate, the family discover more on Sean's secret life.

Speaking about landing the role, Ben said it was an honour for him to take on such serious subject matter. "I think it's a good way to tell stories, especially for young men who don't know how to process their emotions," he said.

He added that he wanted to give his character a big hug and tell him this would get better, helping to empathise with his role. "To be able to tell that story and have a nice arc, [and] show all aspects the good, bad and ugly."

Ben confessed that filming the show was intense and that the four-piece series kept him on his toes throughout. Talking about how he took on the "roller coaster ride" of filming, he said: "It's very surreal and confronting because you have to jump in and go in immediately."

The series has already been released in Australia, premiering at the end of December in 2022. The show received mixed reviews from critics.
