Charles III in pictures: The new King’s reign has already seen some of the most momentous events in recent British history. As his first-year anniversary approaches, we look at some of the highlights so far…

It been a momentous first year for King Charles III – and his subjects.

From the sudden death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, through the period of national mourning, the funeral, the Coronation and the hard task of establishing the first new monarchy for seven decades, we have seen an extraordinary 12 months.

And it is culminating now in a poignant return to Balmoral for Charles and the Royal Family – the home that means so much to them and where, on September 8, Elizabeth II died. And her son found himself King.

SEPTEMBER

King for just one day, Charles looks moved as he reads the many messages left with well-wishers’ flowers outside Buckingham Palace September 9 2022

His Majesty King Charles III  and Camilla, Queen Consort receive addresses from both Houses of Parliament at Westminster Hall September 12 2022

King Charles walks with his mother’s coffin, draped in the Royal Standard as it is carried into  Westminster Abbey for her State Funeral on September 19 2022

 October

King Charles greets Rishi Sunak, the newly appointed Conservative Party leader and incoming Prime Minister at Buckingham Palace, October 25 2022. This is the King’s second month but he has already met two PMs

Acknowledging the huge public support at this time has been an important task for the new King and Queen. Particular thanks were owed to the people of Balmoral, where the Queen passed away, and Aberdeenshire. Here, Charles and Camilla attend a reception at Ballater  on October II

A warm greeting for Stella McCartney who was unsure if she was meant to curtsey before he pulled her in for a hug at a Buckingham Palace reception with Rishi Sunak ahead of Cop27, the environmental summit, on November 4

King Charles and Queen Camilla attended a Diplomatic reception at Buckingham Palace, December 6 2022. Camilla is wearing the Belgian Sapphire Tiara

King Charles meets Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds at Wrexham football club on December 9. Reynolds and follow actor Rob McElhenney bought the club in 2021

January 2023

February

February 20 – and King Charles III receives the hongi, a traditional Maori greeting from a New Zealander who is part of the Ukrainian contingent being trained in Wiltshire by British troops

March 

King Charles and Queen Camilla with the German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife, Elke Buendenbender. This is Charles’s first foreign trip as King. King Charles shares a joke with actress and presenter Hannah Waddingham at this year’s Eurovision song contest in Liverpool on April 26 

King Charles III presents new Standards and Colours to the Life Guards of the Household Cavalry at Buckingham Palace on  April 27. The LIfe Guards are one of the oldest regiments, having accompanied King Charles III on his return from exile at the 1660  Restoration

King Charles is officially presented with ‘Noble, a horse given to him by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on April 28 

May 

King Charles and Queen Camilla begin their journey from Buckingham Palace  to Westminster Abbey on May 6, Coronation day
