Flying Scotsman crash: Beloved steam train is hit on heritage railway

Flying Scotsman crash: Beloved steam train is hit by another carriage on heritage railway in Northern Scotland leaving two people in hospital

  •  The crash happened at Aviemore Railway Station, in the Cairngorms, at 7.10pm

Two people were taken to hospital tonight after the Flying Scotsman was involved in a crash with the Royal Scotsman locomotive in the Highlands.

The incident occurred on the Strathspey Railway at Aviemore Railway Station at 7.10pm.

Police confirmed that two people were taken to Raigmore Hospital for treatment with three more treated at the scene.

It is understood one of the heritage vehicles crashed into the other stationary train, resulting in them locking their buffers.

The collision led to the closure of the nearby main line – causing delays for passengers on other routes. The Strathspey railway line is used by heritage vehicles.

The Flying Scotsman is owned by the National Railway Museum in York and is currently in Scotland to mark the centenary of the world’s most famous locomotive.
