Tributes have been paid to a pub landlord who died after he was stabbed – as police arrest a woman on suspicion of murder. 

Matthew Bryant was last night found with life-threatening injuries outside the Hare and Hounds pub in Maidstone town centre in Kent. 

Police rushed to the site on Lower Boxley Road at 6pm. Matthew was given medical treatment by emergency services but was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after.

This morning police arrested a woman in her 50s on suspicion of murder, who is said to be known to Matthew. 

Detectives have said enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.

Matthew had worked as a pub landlord for 25 years and had taken over the Hare and Hounds in 2015, according to reports. 

Tributes have now been paid to him, with Becky Whitehead saying: ‘R.I.P Matt. Love and thoughts to the family and friends. I’m so sorry for your loss.’

Chris Leach said: ‘He really didn’t. Hadn’t got a bad bone in his body. You couldn’t help but love him.’

Mark Osborne added: ‘Matt and Caroline were the best landlords you could ever meet all my thoughts go out to all his family and friends heaven has got a true angel. R.I.P Matt.’

The road was shut outside the Hare and Hounds pub, between the roundabout at Staceys Street and the J&S Accessories shop.

A number of officers were at the scene, and were diverting traffic as well as carrying out inquiries.

Two forensic cars and four police vehicles remained there into the evening and police taped off the road. Multiple police vehicles remained outside the pub this morning. 

In a statement, Kent Police said: ‘Officers have arrested a woman on suspicion of a murder in Maidstone.

‘Kent Police was called to Lower Boxley Road at 6pm on Monday 11 September 2023, and patrols attended along with South East Coast Ambulance Service.

‘A man was treated for injuries consistent with stab wounds and was confirmed deceased at the scene shortly after. His next of kin have been informed.

‘An investigation by the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate was commenced and a woman in her 50s was arrested and taken into custody.

‘It is understood the suspect and the victim were known to each other. A cordon remains in place at the scene while enquiries are completed into the circumstances surrounding the incident.’
