A 72-year-old Idaho woman has been found alive four days after her car crashed and tumbled 200 yards down a canyon wall.

Penny Clark had been reported missing last week but was found alive and conscious over the weekend by two men who discovered her silver 2021 Chevy Equinox wrecked and alerted authorities.

According to the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office, first responders were able to locate Clark about 40 feet away from her crashed car, which had hit a canyon wall in the area of Map Rock and Rim roads.

She was taken to a local hospital for her injuries and has not made a statement on how she survived the crash. According to her family, the elderly woman had gone out to run errands before she was reported missing.

Her rescue operation took nearly two hours with the help of multiple agencies, including Life Flight Network, Nampa Police Department, Upper Deer Flat Fire, Melba Fire, Canyon County Paramedics and Idaho Fish & Game.

The agencies determined that the quickest way to rescue Clark would be by foot instead of using a helicopter.

Clark was carried out of the ravine and was transferred by a Life Flight Network helicopter to an area hospital for treatment.

Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue said: ‘This is frankly one of the most miraculous incidents that I can recall in all my years in law enforcement, and it’s a true testament to the strength and fortitude of Penny Clark.

‘It’s truly a miracle, and I’m hopeful that she makes a full recovery,’ said Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue

‘The medics who evaluated her on scene believe that she had been there for at least a couple of days, and more than likely since Tuesday when her family last had contact with her. It’s truly a miracle, and I’m hopeful that she makes a full recovery.

‘I want to thank all of the agencies who assisted us today, particularly Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue, for their efforts in bringing Ms. Clark to safety.

‘I’d also like to sincerely thank the two men who came upon the vehicle and had the wherewithal to determine that it was likely connected to the missing person reported by Nampa PD. This was a true team effort.’

The road on Colorado National Monument’s Rim Rock Drive is known to be challenging due to how narrow and steep it is in some sections with sheer drop-offs. The road also has no shoulders and drivers are advised caution in tight corners.
