I'm a hairstylist and here's four mistakes that are killing your hair – too much dry shampoo is a huge no for starters | The Sun

A HAIRSTYLIST has revealed the four mistakes you are making that are killing your hair.

So if you want long, healthy locks, you’ll need to listen up and pay attention.

A hair whizz from Vitamo Hair Growth took to social media to share the four things you need to stop doing – including putting hair oil on your locks before applying heat and over-using dry shampoo.

Sharing her advice, the beauty expert said: “Here are four things you’re probably doing that are literally killing your hair.

“Hi, I’m Carly, I’m a licensed hairstylist. I help women grow and heal their hair and I’m here to share all my secrets with you.”

According to Carly, the first mistake people make is with hair oil, as she advised: “I’m sure you’re all familiar with hair oil. I can also guarantee that all of you have used oil on your hair before applying heat.

Super simple hack to instantly add volume to your hair, according to a stylist

“This literally destroys your hair. If you apply any type of oil before applying hot tools or a blow dryer, you are killing your hair.

“I want all of you to vow to me and yourselves that you will never do this again.

“If you apply oil before applying a hot tool, you are literally frying your hair in oil, the same way you would fry, fried food.

“Don’t treat your hair like McDonald’s chicken nuggets.

CHECKING OUT

Primark employee reveals six annoying things customers always do

“Instead, save the oil for last, or, only use oil as a treatment before you wash your hair.

“But if you are using oil, make sure it is the last product you apply and use a cream or spray aerosol heat protectant instead of an oil-based one.”

Not only this, but Carly also stressed that people are using too much dry shampoo, which is ruining their locks.

She added: “Number two – over using dry shampoo.

“I get it – you’re oily, you want volume, your roots are feeling a little sticky.

“Using dry shampoo too often and too much of it is actually clogging your hair follicles.

“This can lead to extreme hair loss and when you have clogged hair follicles, they cannot function properly, meaning your hair cannot grow properly.

“So if you’re experiencing hair loss, maybe a lot of shedding, this could be the culprit.

“Instead of over-using dry shampoo, why don’t we just get to the root of the oil in the first place? Stop trying to hide it, crazy concept I know.

“So here’s what you’re going to do – you’re going to balance the PH of your scalp at least once a week.

“So you are going to dilute pure apple cider vinegar and you’re going to apply it on your scalp. Leave it on for at least 15 minutes and then rinse it out.

“Just like everywhere else on your body, your scalp has a PH level and lots of things can cause it to be imbalanced – hair products, your fingers when you run your hands through your hair, the type of water you have (hard or soft), sweat, dead skin cells, the list goes on.

“When you keep your scalp balanced, you won’t feel that you struggle with as much oil.”

As well as this, the hair whizz stressed the importance of buying hair growth supplements with caution.

Carly continued: “Mistake number three – buying whatever hair growth supplement you see at the drugstore that catches your eye.

“No, please no. I feel like we all get so label happy and just believe whatever the label says. ‘This will grow my hair? Great.’ But the US actually has super loose terms when it comes to FDA regulations.

"That’s why the UK bans over 1,000 ingredients going into beauty products and the US bans less than 30, so that’s why being educated is so important.

“If you’re looking for a proper hair growth supplement, you need to make sure that it contains the vitamins your hair needs.

“A lot of the time these supplements have unnecessary additives and things like that – and they’re literally doing nothing for you. Or, they’ll have the vitamins your hair needs, but there won’t be enough of that vitamin, so it’s not going to do anything and you’re still going to be in a deficiency.”

Finally, Carly explained that putting shampoo on the ends of your hair is a big no no.

She concluded: “Mistake number four – shampooing your ends.

“Shampoo is a scalp product, it is not made for your ends. Your conditioner is made for your ends, your shampoo is made for your scalp.

“So by running your shampoo through your ends every time you wash your hair, you are stripping your hair of its natural nutrients and you’re completely adding to its dryness.”

The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @vitamohaircare, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as at the time of writing, it had quickly amassed a whopping 179,400 views in just three days.

Social media users were thankful for the advice and took to the comments to express this.

One person said: “Why didn't they teach this in school?”

Another added: “This explains a lot about my dead hair.”

A third commented: “I will never do that again!”
