Many of us Brits have been struggling to cope with the rising temperatures this week.
The heatwave has resulted in sleepless nights, sweaty armpits and a high volume of ice cream consumption.

Laundry expert, Deyan Dimitrov, CEO atLaundryheap, said all you need is a wet towel to cope with the weather.
The method involves hanging cold, wet towels up around your home at key entry points – such as windows and doors – to cool down your home.
You can use freshly washed towels or any clean towel dipped in cold water.
The hack allows trapped water to evaporate from the surface of the towels, and cool the air flowing around your house.
Since the trick can be achieved using existing household items, it’s a cheap and useful alternative for houses that don’t have access to air conditioning or fans.
Choosing your towels
To make sure that the process is as efficient as it can be, here are the most important things to consider when preparing your towels:
- Make sure that you use light coloured towels to reduce the amount of light that they will absorb when hung out in the sun to prevent them from getting hot.
- Wash your towels before hanging them up – if they’re not properly clean, then you may fill your house with damp and unpleasant smells. It’s recommended that you freshly launder your towels before trying this hack. You could even try adding in a few drops of gentle essential oils (such as lavender) to your softener compartment when washing your towels to make your home smell nice.
Finding the perfect spot
This method works best in sunlit and breezy environments, as these conditions allow water to evaporate faster from the towels and give out a greater cooling effect.
Try to hang your towels at entry points within your home where fresh air can come inside, such as near doorways or against open windows.
This will prevent your towels from becoming damp and will immediately cool any air coming in from these entry points.
Making it extra cool
For those of you that are particularly struggling on a hot day and want to take it one step further, try the following:
- Position fans next to your towels (if they’re on a clothes horse), facing inwards, which will help to push the cooler air further around your room. This also works well for particularly humid days when the wind and sun aren’t strong enough to circulate air through your home.
- To make it more effective, you could replace your towels with freshly chilled ones throughout the day, but you should only need to replace them once or twice, leaving roughly four hours in between changes.
- Freezing your towels can offer you faster and greater relief. After soaking them in cold water, roll them up inside a ziplock bag for protection, and place them in your freezer roughly an hour before you need them. Take the towel out, let it thaw for a few minutes (until it can be hung properly), and it’s ready to use. Alternatively, you could dip your towels in ice water, if you’re strapped for time.
