How England lined up last time they lost to Ukraine with player who made history for wrong reason | The Sun

ENGLAND travel to face Ukraine tomorrow looking to avoid a second defeat to the nation – and more unwanted history.

Gareth Southgate’s side have already beaten Serhiy Rebrov's team this year, winning the Euro 2024 qualifier 2-0 with goals from Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka at Wembley.

The Three Lions are unbeaten so far and have won four out of four Group C games, scoring 15 goals in the process and only conceding once.

Tomorrow’s showdown will be held at The Tarczynski Arena in Wroclaw, Poland due to the war in Ukraine.

And Southgate and England will be desperate to avoid any slips – having lost a 100 per cent record to Ukraine in the past.

That happened way back in 2009 under Fabio Capello, who suffered his first competitive defeat when the star-studded Three Lions lost on the road to South Africa.

Man Utd stars ‘fed up with Sancho’ as he struggles to win over players & Ten Hag

And it proved to be a night for unwanted history as one player wrote his name into the record books.

Here’s how England lined-up in that 1-0 reverse from Saturday 10 October, 2009 in what is Ukraine’s only victory over us so far:

The former West Ham stopper, who now works as a pundit, made history by becoming the first England goalkeeper to be sent-off.

Green’s red came after only 13 minutes for fouling Artem Milevskiy after the striker latched on to a Rio Ferdinand mistake.

Andriy Shevchenko sent substitute goalie David James the wrong way from the spot but struck the post before Sergiy Nazarenko's deflected shot on 29 minutes secured the win.

The ex-full-back played the full game and won 54 caps in total.

He retired in 2018 after leaving Stoke City following a trophy-laden career at the likes of West Ham, Chelsea, Portsmouth and Liverpool and has now also entered the punditry world.

The defender was at fault for Ukraine’s goal in what was an unusual error by the legendary centre-half.

These days Manchester United icon Ferdinand can be found providing the analysis on the Premier League on TNT Sports, and talking on his YouTube channel Five.

The Chelsea stalwart skipped the Three Lions that night and would eventually help the team bounce back and reach the World Cup.

But he announced his international retirement in 2012 after an FA disciplinary hearing found him guilty of racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League game, something that was not proven in court.

Terry would go on to win two more Premier League titles with Chelsea before spending a season with Aston Villa prior to embarking on his coaching career.

He is in talks to become the new manager of Saudi side Al-Shabab.

Even arguably England’s greatest-ever left-back was unable to precedent defeat back on this night.

The ex-Arsenal and Chelsea defender, who retired from international football in 2014, is now back working as coach for England’s U21s.

The winger’s night was cut-short on this occasion as he made way for James following Green’s red card.

The star went on to win 21 caps for England and announced his retirement from playing in 2022.

Another legend for England that was unable to inspire a comeback this time around.

Following his return to Chelsea as caretaker manager at the end of last season after being sacked by Everton, he is currently out of work.

A rare start for the Manchester United icon for his country, although he continued to play for them until 2015.

After a caretaker stint in charge of the Red Devils, he took over Middlesbrough in the Championship last term for his first job in management.

A Liverpool and England icon, Stevie G scored 21 goals in 114 matches for the Three Lions.

He has also moved into management and won the Scottish Premiership in his first job with Rangers.

Since then he endured a miserable spell at Aston Villa before heading to Saudi Arabia this summer to take over at Al-Ettifaq.

Back on this night he suffered a thigh injury and had to be replaced at half time by James Milner – and the Brighton star is the only man involved from this game that is still currently playing.

Wazza was another star name among the starting XI under Capello and eventually ended up breaking Sir Bobby Charlton’s long-standing England goal record.

That has since been surpassed by Harry Kane, although he still holds Manchester United’s record.

After a season in the Derby County dug-out, Rooney is now in America as boss of MLS side DC United but could soon be back in the UK with Birmingham

The bruising, powerhouse forward lined-up alongside some stellar names in attack for both club and country but was replaced on this occasion late on by sub Carlton Cole.

This summer he made an international return when he was appointed as part of the England U18 coaching set-up.
