BBC Breakfast star returns to sofa after sparking health concerns

BBC Breakfast: Sally Nugent opens the show

BBC Breakfast presenter Sally Nugent was back on screens today hosting the show alongside Jon Kay after missing yesterday morning.

The 52-year-old mum of one didn’t appear on the red sofa on Monday as presenter Sarah Campbell stepped in to replace her.

However, she didn’t address her absence at all going straight to the main news stories in her show introduction.

This comes after she was praised by viewers earlier this month for “soldiering on” through an apparent illness while presenting the show.

The star was visibly battling a seasonal cold as she hosted the flagship news show alongside host Jon Kay on November 7.

Although she looked fine in a pale pink trouser suit with a white tee underneath, with her hair in its usual sleek style and picture-perfect make-up, her voice gave her away as she had the trademark “bunged up” sound that accompanies a cold.

Ever the professional, she gamely carried on and conducted interviews with guests including former cricketer Stuart Broad.

However, she subsequently took some time away from the show to recover and was replaced by Sarah Campbell in the interim.

It has been a difficult year for Sally who split from her husband of 13 years back in May.

Sally and Gavin Hawthorn, 52, were reported to have split as their lives “moved in different directions”.

A source told the Daily Mail: “It’s very sad but they are no longer together.

“I think they tried to tough it out for quite a while as they didn’t want to split up if they could possibly help it for the sake of their son but they clearly couldn’t make a go of it.

“They’ve both been very guarded about the reasons behind their growing apart but it’s been plain for a while that they had been and now it’s obvious that they haven’t been able to resolve that despite clearly trying for some time.”

BBC Breakfast continues daily on BBC One from 6am.
