Emmerdale star lands new role and returns to TV three years after quitting soap and taking a break from the spotlight | The Sun

RYAN Hawley was best known for playing Robert Sugden in Emmerdale from 2014.

The soap actor left the long-running ITV soap in 2019 after his character murdered rapist Lee.


But now Ryan, 38, has another role as he will play a farmer named Sid Crabtree in All Creatures Great And Small.

The new Channel 5 character moves to the Dales from Bradford who has taken up farming for health reasons.

He relocates alongside his wife Elsie (played by Chloe Harris) and their children in the six-part drama.

However, they feel their relative inexperience is frowned upon by their neighbours.

In the production, their cows are struck down by a devastating illness that impacts the family's livelihood.

They call in veterinary specialist team from Skeldale House who might also just be the key to their welcome in the community.

Before his time in Emmerdale, Ryan was known amongst the acting community for his variety of roles.

He also starred in the ITV miniseries Titanic, that was made to mark the centenary of the disaster.

Written by Julian Fellowes, he played first class passenger Jack Thayer in the four part drama based on the doomed ocean liner.

He also played the character of Will in 2008 in a show called Survivors, which told the story of the aftermath of a pandemic.

But his portrayal as Robert in the ITV soap was what caught the attention of the British public over five years.

His character went through affairs, manslaughter, prison, a husband and a wife.

He become the fourth actor to portray Robert following Richard Smith, Christopher Smith and Karl Davies.

In one of his most explosive storylines, he accidentally killed sister-in-law Katie after she took a photo of him and Aaron kissing, where he was engaged to Chrissie White at the time.

The actor received widespread acclaim for his performance, which led to nominations in multiple categories at the The British Soap Awards, which include Best Villain and Best Actor.
