Suits to return with L.A spin-off as boss promises ‘same energy’ as original hit

Following the renewed success of hit legal drama Suits, bosses have revealed a new spin-off is in the works.

The original series followed Mike Ross (played by Patrick J Adams) as an attorney who lands a job at a prestigious New York legal firm despite never attending law school.

Suits also marked Meghan Markle’s final acting gig before leaving her role as Rachel Zane to marry Prince Harry and into the Royal family in 2018.

Despite its initial success on USA Network and on Dave, the show landed on Netflix earlier this summer and instantly smashed records.

As a result, Suits became the first TV show to record three billion minutes viewed in seven consecutive weeks.

In August, the creator Aaron Korsh spoke to the LA Times and credited the popularity boost to Meghan’s role in the Royal family.

The show’s renewed interest sparked rumours of a spin-off with a fresh focus on new characters in a different location.

According to Universal International Studios and UCP president Beatrice Springborn, the Los Angeles-based show is in the planning process.

As reported by Variety, Springborn discussed the highly-anticipated title during an industry conference in the UK and teased it would be set in “the same timeframe,” as Suits.

She added that the show will “have the same energy and good-looking people as the original did.”

Although it’s unclear if any of the original stars will reprise their roles, Springborn confirmed: “We are working on it right now, it’s so fun and happy.”

Meghan addressed the show’s popularity at Variety’s Power of Women gala on Thursday, she said: “Isn’t it wild?”

However, she admitted she had “no idea” why Suits had regained so much popularity since wrapping up.

As for the Duchess’ potential comeback, showrunner Gene Klein stated: “I would assume that’s just not possible.”
