I'm a laundry pro – five 'normal' things that are ruining your clothes & why you need to ditch the fabric conditioner | The Sun

A LAUNDRY expert has revealed the five "normal" things you're doing that are effectively ruining your clothes.

Consumer Reports test engineer Rich Handel shared some of the most commonly made mistakes when it comes to laundry, and insisted that using fabric conditioner is at the top of the list.

"It’s a waste of money," he said in a video on TikTok of the product used by millions of people worldwide.

"Not only can it irritate sensitive skin, it can leave a layer of residue on your clothes and reduce the absorption of your towels."

Secondly, don't bother doing your laundry in the bath, when you can "get the same results with your washing machine with a lot less work and mess".

"Just use the Extra Rinse or Rinse and Spin cycle without detergent," he added.

Next up, "save your money" by just using the recommended amount of laundry detergent for a medium load.

"Detergent is concentrated," he said.

"Using too much can leave residue on your clothes and machine."

And if you're dealing with stained clothes, you need to make sure that the stain is definitely completely gone before you put it in the tumble dryer.

"The heat from the dryer sets the stain and you lose your chance to get that stain out," he explained.

Rich's last tip is to ever overstuff your washing machine or tumble dryer.

"It doesn't allow the clothes and the detergent to circulate," he said.

"Same with the dryer, overstuffing it doesn't allow the air to circulate among the load."

Despite Rich's warnings, lots of people in the comments section admitted they're not willing to ditch the fabric conditioner.

"Fabric softener makes my clothes smell divine, that’s why I use it," one wrote.

"But my clothes don’t smell nice if I don’t use fabric softener lol," another added.

"I use fabric softener for the scent," a third agreed.

"Fabric softener really softens my clothes tho…. There’s a difference," someone else commented.

As another vowed: "I’ll never stop using fabric softener".

However, others insisted that people need to pay attention to advice like Rich's suggestions.

"A lot of people unwilling to let go of their fabric softener even after so many experts say to stop using it. Insanity," one raged.

"Stopped using fabric softener after I saw a repair guy on here show what it does to the machine," another added.

"And I see no difference between using vs not."

"Well, I been telling this stuff for a while. Glad someone has my back lol," a third wrote.
