Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has issued a stark warning to anyone getting married during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The financial guru appeared on This Morning recently, where a caller had a query about booking a wedding venue.
She claimed the venues were refusing payment via debit or credit card so asked Martin whether she should simply pay by bank transfer (BACS).
But he was quick to shut down that possibility.
“I have to be plain and this isn't what you are going to want to hear,” he said.
“I would never pay for a substantial transaction in BACS.
“BACS are bank transfers and they have no protection. There are no rights.
“I’m going to upset a lot of wedding venues here so I’m going to make it very personal.
“I would never make a large commercial payment via BACS because I don't get the payments.”
With the increased uncertainty over the pandemic, the caller said it had proven hard to get wedding insurance because insurers had a higher risk of paying out.
And, coupled with the need to pay by BACS, Martin advised maybe delaying the wedding.
“If you can't book your wedding now, I know this isn't what you want to hear, I think it's something you have to be conservative about,” he said.
Martin suggested companies may be anxious about taking credit card payments because they give consumers additional rights if the booking is cancelled.
Thousands of brides and grooms to be have been forced to cancel their wedding plans over the last several months due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
And in their latest string of new restrictions, the government cut the number of guests allowed from 30 to 15.
