Succession season three has been highly anticipated following the success of the show which first started airing on HBO in 2018. The programme was put on hold for the past two years as a result of the coronavirus pandemic but over 24 months later, the American statical drama is making its way back to the small screen. Here is everything you need to know about how many episodes are going to be broadcast of the hit television show.
How many episodes are in Succession season 3?
The show centres around the Roy family, who are all fighting for control of the global media and entertainment company, Waystar RoyCo.
With the leader of the clan, Logan Roy (playing by Brian Cox), getting weaker by the day, his so-called loves ones are battling it out to see who will become his heir.
At the end of the 10-part season two, one of Logan’s sons, Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) ambushed his father at a press conference and the media mogul is now on his knees.
Season three has been filmed in various locations, from New York City all the way to the European hotspot of Italy.
However, fans might be disappointed to learn there are only going to be nine episodes in the latest run, which starts on Sunday, October 17, 2021.
Seasons one and two both featured 10 episodes and it has not been explained why the upcoming instalment is going to be shorter.
It is most likely this is because of how delayed the production team were as a result of the pandemic messing up their filming schedule.
Filming was meant to start in April 2020 but because the whole world was plunged into lockdown, it didn’t resume until November.
The shoot wrapped up in June of this year when the cast travelled to Italy for one of season three’s storylines.
It’s jolly thrilling

Leading star and Logan star Brian explained in July 2020 he wasn’t too sure how many episodes there were going to be in season three.
The actor said: “There’s certainly a storyline. We don’t know how many episodes we’re doing. It could be eight, it could be nine.
“We’re in that ballpark. But of course, we have to see how the current crisis affects the writing and what we take on board,” he told The New York Times.
Although the pandemic had a huge impact on the filming, it is not yet known if the episodes will reference Covid-19.
What will happen in Succession in season three?
The drama will pick up directly after the end of season two, with Logan feeling betrayed by his son.
Following on from Kendall’s actions, the synopsis reads: “Scrambling to secure familial, political, and financial alliances, tensions rise as a bitter corporate battle threatens to turn into a family civil war.”
Brian also teased what’s to come, explaining: “I nearly fell off my chair because [show creator Jesse Armstrong] never tells you about the next series.
“We never knew from episode to episode what was going to happen. It’s jolly thrilling. That’s all I can say,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
Is Succession season three the last?
It is not yet known if the upcoming block of episodes is going to be the last but the writer of the show, Jesse Armstrong, has detailed how he sees the drama ending.
In an interview, the creator explained viewers will learn who the Waystar Royco inheritor is and it might be a big surprise.
He said: “It’s not the sort of show which should go on forever.
“Because there’s a question set up in the title of the show and I think it’s a question you eventually want answered,” he told Entertainment Weekly.
Succession season three premieres Sunday, October 17 on HBO.
