A devastating flashback in the third season of Yellowstone revealed the shocking event behind Jamie (played by Wes Bentley) and Beth Dutton’s (Kelly Reilly) vicious hatred of one another. However, following a key moment in the Paramount series’ second season, Reilly admitted she still had a tough time delivering her brutal tirades against her on-screen brother.

Kelly Reilly has opened up on one of Beth Dutton’s harshest moments with her brother, Jamie, in the Western drama’s second season.

Their sibling rivalry was finally explained in last year’s episode ‘Cowboys and Dreamers’, which turned the clocks back to their teenage years.

The heartbreaking flashback confirmed that Beth was unknowingly made infertile when her brother took her to an Indian Health clinic to terminate her pregnancy.

Viewers finally understood why Beth’s hatred for her brother was so strong that she proposed Jamie should consider killing himself during one of their many heated exchanges in season two.

Jamie was shaken to the core as he realised he’ll never be able to regain her sister’s trust.

Unpicking this pivotal scene between the two Duttons, Kelly Reilly confessed she can almost empathise with Beth’s intense disdain for Jamie at this moment.

In a behind-the-scenes video for season two, Reilly explained: “I kind of understand what’s important to Beth, which is loyalty and selfishness.

“They are two things that Jamie doesn’t hold within himself, he’s incapable of it in her mind.”

During season two, Jamie’s regrets start to pile up after he kills reporter Sarah Nguyen (Michaela Conlin) to ensure the Duttons’ crimes aren’t leaked to the media.

As his true nature is revealed, Beth tells Jamie that he’s finally starting to see himself the way she has always seen him.

Although he had always been the black sheep of the family, many viewers stopped sympathising with Jamie throughout his shocking development in the second and third seasons.

Now Beth’s life is hanging in the balance following the horrific attacks on the Duttons in last year’s finale, many have even predicted Jamie will be revealed as his sister’s attempted murderer.

However, Kelly Reilly admitted she still had trouble delivering some of the more vicious cracks to her co-star during this particular scene.

In the illuminating interview, Reilly disclosed her first reaction to John Coveny & Ian McCulloch and Taylor Sheridan’s edgy script for episode seven, ‘Resurrection Day’.

Although she isn’t completely certain Beth meant what she said, the actress was shocked when her character told her own brother he should consider committing suicide.

She recalled: “It’s brutal; when I read it I really had a hard time with that line.”

“To say that to someone there must have been some deep, deep betrayal. There’s something to it, there’s a tension in there.”

If Reilly and Bentley knew their characters’ history together at the time, they were keeping spoilers close to the chest as season two aired in 2019.

Season three finally revealed their biggest secret, so fans aren’t sure if the two Dutton siblings will ever be able to heal their shattered relationship.

New episodes of Yellowstone are hoped to start airing next month, and fans are eagerly awaiting to find out whether Beth managed to survive last year’s brutal season finale.

Yellowstone season 4 will premiere in 2021 on Paramount.
